Last month, James and I were fortunate enough to be able to attend Onomondo’s “Made for IoT Summit”. Onomondo are an IoT connectivity provider whose focus is on making and providing cellular connectivity as simple and straightforward as possible for their customers and partners. Founded in 2012 to remove barriers in IoT they have developed a global IoT network providing features such as Cloud integration, enhanced insights to monitor and track network logs providing engineers with real-time visibility, as well as a focus on providing eSIM’s to the industry that are more accessible, scalable and flexible.

Their IoT summit, hosted at their offices in Copenhagen, gave us the opportunity to network and talk to some of the sharpest minds in IoT, telecoms and digital infrastructure. Throughout our visit we had the opportunity to discuss and explore alongside other partners and attendees some of the main challenges and opportunities currently faced by those within the IoT ecosystem.

What we learned:Complexity as a barrier

During one of the intriguing talks hosted by John Gole, an IoT industry analyst from IDC, we heard an all too familiar message and something that we have experienced over the last few years; IoT adoption is growing, but complexity is still slowing it down.Whilst this wasn't new to us, it did highlight where the slow down comes from, it’s not from limited technologies or hardware, instead it’s the sheer amount of skills, ROI and simplified, scalable pathways that are needed in order to encourage organisations to move past pilot IoT projects within their specific industries.

One of the ways in which we have been approaching this often challenging subject is by hosting our own IoT events in order to demonstrate the value and commercial opportunities that adopting IoT solutions can provide to organisations, specifically through data monitoring and efficiency improvements.

Collaboration over Competition:

Another aspect that became clear to James and I throughout the summit and during conversations with attendees was that Interoperability and collaboration are essential. From providing eSIM solutions to other IoT technology providers to helping build scalable platforms to manage and interpret collected data, the need for partners within the IoT service industry shouldn't be understated especially if the industry and IoT adoption is to grow and break down barriers such as technology and solution complexity.

What’s Next for Us?

After leaving Copenhagen inspired by all those we had met and spoken to within the IoT solution space, we left with a renewed focus and clarity of direction. As we explore and expand on our IoT offerings a focus needs to be on the interoperable infrastructure and continue to explore pilot solutions such as Onomondo’s eSIM infrastructure. Thanks to the whole of the Onomondo team for hosting an incredible event. We’re excited about the road ahead - and if you’re an organisation exploring how to simplify or scale your IoT strategy, we’d love to talk.
